A good resume doesn't guarantee you a job; but a bad resume can
prevent you from even getting an interview! A good resume is a personal
marketing brochure about you. It is an advertisement of your most
pertinent skills and experiences. Your resume should be accurate,
truthful and always emphasize your strengths, talents and accomplishments
as they relate to the job opening.
Important points to remember:
Always...
- Print your resume on standard letter size, white or ivory
paper.
- Space out paragraphs and allow for adequate margins.
- Make certain your resume is one page unless you have an unusually
strong background with many years of experience and outstanding
achievement.
- Make your paragraphs short and to the point.
- Use months and dates.
- Make sure the resume is error-free.
- Include significant contributions you've made at each one
of your jobs.
- Relate your resume to the position for which you are applying.
- List pertinent associations, activities or trade groups.
Never...
- Provide salary information.
- Include remarks about your physical health or appearance.
- Include your present company's phone number unless your
boss knows you are leaving.
- List references or say "References Available on Request".
- Give reasons for termination.
